De aflevering Moedersterfte van de 2 Ambassadors is één van de finalisten in de categorie korte film van het New York’s Beneath the Earth Film Festival.
Dat heeft de jury van het festival bekendgemaakt. Vorig jaar werd de aflevering Aids en Malaria uit dezelfde serie ook al genomineerd. De winnaars worden 31 oktober bekendgemaakt.
Peter Sterk en Fedor van Rossem (van o.a. Klokhuis), alias de 2 Ambassadors maakten Moedersterfte als onderdeel van een serie van 7 afleveringen over de millenniumdoelstellingen. Ze kregen daarbij steun van het NCDO en Oxfam Novib.

Beneath The Earth is een opkomend festival. In de jury zitten onder andere de makers van de hitserie Law&Order, journalisten van het tijdschrift Variety en Gabourey Sidibe die haar overweldigende debuut maakte in de film Precious.
In de genomineerde aflevering zien we hoe twee kortzichtige reclamemannen (Peter Sterk en Fedor van Rossem) in Afrika belanden. Hun opdracht: een filmpje over moedersterfte. Nadat de mannen zich misdragen bij een inheemse dans maakt Peter een jonge vrouw zwanger. Via de plaatselijke medicijnvrouw probeert hij een goedkope abortus te regelen, terwijl Fedor 23 zwangere vrouwen ronselt voor een pakkend spotje. Na tegenslagen en het gebrek aan medewerking van de plaatselijke bevolking vertrekken de mannen. Negen maanden later komt Peter terug om zijn zoon te aanschouwen. Maar in Afrika wacht hem een onaangename verassing.
Peter Sterk en Fedor van Rossem willen met hun serie vooral laten zien dat mensen in Afrika meer zijn dan zielige handophouders. Omdat de gemiddelde berichtgeving over Afrika nogal eenzijdig is kozen zij voor een humoristische insteek. In Nederland was er eerder kritiek, maar ook veel lof voor de serie. Op internationale documentairefestivals in Italië en Iowa wonnen de 2 Ambassadors de publieksprijs.
